abstract = "The present work aims to analyze the situation of the forest
fragmentation in Rio de Janeiro State. This work started from the
land use and land cover map, in the scale 1:100.000, which was
generated with 7 images of Landsat TM sensor, all obtained in
August 2007. This map was generated using a fuzzy model based on
the spectral analysis of the earth features behavior, includding
some manual editions that were made supportind by survey
information. The forestry, as other classes, were characterized by
different object features (descriptors) using the Definiens
Developer software. The scale 1:100.000 corresponds to 5ha of map
detail. The analyses were included important information about
protected areas, elevations data, classes of reliefs and
geomorphology. All these data were analyzed together in a
Geographic Information System (GIS). The study considered the
distribution of the fragments along different classes of all these
themes, which main objective is to understand the forestry patch.
These results allow a preliminary and updated diagnosis of the
situation of the Atlantic Forest in Rio de Janeiro State. The
analyses showed that the current forestry remains of Atlantic
Forest are located in areas of difficult access, mainly in
mountainous or tops of hills. It was still observed the importance
of the conservation of the forest remains for protected areas,
mainly for an integral protection type.",
